The WhatsApp Tutoring Journey

In March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were closed, movements prohibited and businesses closed.
My worry quickly went out to thousands of students who were going to be stuck at home with insufficient or no learning. As long as you don’t read or do something often, you are bound to forget.
My team and I immediately set up WhatsApp groups for learners ranging from Kindergarten to senior six, designed WhatsApp Classroom posters and shared all over social media.
Most parents were already in a dilemma and many schools hadn’t prepared for online learning yet. We enrolled over 500 learners in the first month. We looked forward to getting on WhatsApp daily to meet our learners in respective groups.
As time went by, schools organised zoom and other online study programs for their learners. These were compulsory for most. The numbers reduced greatly because they had to attend online lessons from their respective schools.
This wasn’t the end, some parents started asking for private WhatsApp tutorials. We gladly welcomed them. There was a lady whose daughter I had tutored in math around 2017 needed help with the sibling. We signed her up too. That is when the UK door opened.
Her friend got curious and tried the WhatsApp tutorials. This was new for her and the daughter. They struggled and she said,”Tr Stella this is not working. “
I asked her to be patient and give it time since it was something new. Guess what, the referrals we got until now say it all.
There are many learners that have benefited from the WhatsApp tutorials in Uganda, and UK mainly . We added it onto our Tutoring package.
The feedback speaks for itself. We got a Young Treps business award for best Innovation 2020.

I can’t deny that there have been several challenges along they way, but I am glad they came. They help us to get better when we embark of finding the solutions.
